As primer work for my Year 3 project, we had to investigate an ‘important’ figure who is memorialised on the site in Redcliffe, Bristol. This exercise focused on memory, who gets remembered and who decides this. After thorough analysis of his life, Nia Ferris (fellow student) decided to represent what we thought were important parts of Samuel Plimsoll’s life through different ‘lines’. These included his merchant career (the declining line), his family history (the line with a vacant middle as not much information is known), his positive public opinion and also his controversy with politicians (the other two inclining lines). We couldn’t find any bad information on Plimsoll so decided not to suggest that there might be any because this could be misinformation and a form of mistruth. We decided to focus on the good things he did in his life and memorialise this in a model, we have shown this through the gold dusting.
